I began my career out of school thinking that I had all of the education I needed to be successful in life. I swore I would never read another book, that all I needed now was to work hard and I could be successful.
I began my career in trucking in Greensboro, N.C., starting out at $275.00 a month. I worked hard, putting in 50 to 60 hours a week. I worked with that company for five years and when I left, I was making a whopping $525.00 a month. I had been offered a job with the North Carolina ports to be a sales representative for them, and they started me out at $800.00 a month. That was a lot more money than the job I was leaving, but because of the fear of starting something new I hesitated in making that move. I went back to my employer and told him I was leaving. He offered me $25.00 a month more to stay. Boy, that hurt. After five years with the ports, I was working on a plan to develop a lumber dry kiln and trucking business, and I was fired by the state. I got these businesses up and running, and we sold them in 1974 for a profit. I remained on as general manager and was fired from there. I proceeded to start another trucking company and it was successful until 1980 when the government deregulated the industry. It went downhill from there. Since I was not a quitter, I kept pumping all the funds I could raise from my assets to keep the business afloat. Finally, in late 1983, I had to shut it down. I was broke. we had no more money or cash flow. We lost our home and everything and filed bankruptcy in 1985. I had not read a book since college when I was given the book "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. From that point on, I began to read every book and listen to every tape that I could. In 1993, I joined Market America knowing that this was the vehicle for me to get out of our financial problems and achieve the lifestyle we wanted. The one thing that most people do not realize is that this industry is the largest factory for personal growth out of any industry in the world. It is disguised as a means of distribution for products, but the greatest product is the personal growth that you achieve by learning the systems and following the leaders and by reading books and listening to tapes of all the great leaders.
